Steelers CB Steven Nelson hints at team’s anthem plans

The Pittsburgh Steelers have never really partaken in any of the protest stuff many NFL teams have dealt with. The only time the Steelers ever did anything remotely resembling a protest was back in 2017 when they made an ill-fated attempt to stay in the tunnel during the anthem.

It ended up being a debacle when offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva got stuck outside of the tunnel when the anthem started and he stood there alone.

Anthem protests are back but what will the Steelers do? Cornerback Steven Nelson spoke to the media on Saturday and kept the specifics close to the vest but did say “we’ll come out together as one unit and we’ll express our beliefs in that aspect.”

What does this mean? It’s hard to say but you can bet whatever a Mike Tomlin lead team does it will be understated and professional. Prior to one of the team’s televised night practices this training camp, the entire team met at midfield and took a knee. I’m not sure if we will see something like that but I won’t be shocked.

How does Steeler Nation feel about the prospect of the Steelers breaking from their tradition and doing some sort of anthem protest? Let us know in the comments.
