One player with a decision to make before he arrives at training camp is Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Mike Hilton. Hilton hasn’t signed his exclusive-rights restricted free agent tender as he is hoping to work out a full-blown contract extension before the start of the season.
But the rules state he cannot show up to training camp without a contract. The team is reporting to camp today so Hilton is stuck with a decision. If the team and his representatives cannot come to terms on a contract extension, his only way to join the team at training camp is to sign his ERFA tender.
Keep in mind there’s nothing to say he can’t sign the tender in good faith, and the two sides will still work out an extension during training camp and the preseason. But there’s nowhere else for Hilton to play this year.
Hilton burst on the scene two seasons ago and has quickly become one of the better slot cornerbacks in the league.
