Steelers CB Artie Burns gets his bonus, eyes backup spot

The third training camp practice has come and gone and cornerback Artie Burns is still on the team. This means the team is paying out his $800,000 roster bonus and it looks like for better or worse, Burns will be on the roster for the 2019 season.

The starting cornerbacks are Joe Haden and Steven Nelson and they are both as good as advertised. The outside is in good hands. But the third cornerback is the primary backup on the outside is vital. With Burns getting his bonus he should get a fair shot to earn the spot. He got his first interception of camp in practice on Sunday.

Who is he competing with? You might think it would be rookie Justin Layne. But this is a young man who is terribly athletic but very raw in terms of his football skills. The guy to watch is Cameron Sutton who has already made multiple big plays in camp.

Will the competition push Burns? He takes a lot of heat from the fans but him playing well can only be good for this team.
