Rookies will make rookie mistakes, and Pittsburgh Steelers center Kendrick Green made plenty of them in their tie with the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
Green had a few errant snaps throughout the game in critical situations. He had opportunities to place the blame on the inclement weather or Mason Rudolph at quarterback but chose to take the high road when asked about the snap miscues.
“No excuse for it, honestly; you just can’t have it,” Green said to the Steelers media on Friday.
In his final stray snap of the game, Green sent the ball sailing over Rudolph’s head with running back Najee Harris recovering. The critical overtime mistake set the Steelers up for a third-and-26. The way things had been going for the Steelers, they weren’t going to convert. And they didn’t.
Rudolph’s pass was even too high for 6-foot-5 tight tend Pat Freiermuth, and it was nearly intercepted.
As Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said in his press conference this week, Green just has to get the snaps down. “We’re just gonna ask that guy to snap the ball in a proficient professional manner, and we’re gonna move on with our life.”
