With just days to go until the 2020 NFL draft, we are going to go through all of the Steelers positional units to review the current state of the roster, gauge draft needs and talk about some approaches to addressing the need.
Next up are the cornerbacks.
Roster
The addition of Steven Nelson last offseason was huge for the improvement of the Steelers defense. He paired up with Joe Haden to form one of the best starting combos in the AFC. In addition the Steelers have Mike Hilton, who might be the best slot cornerback in the NFL. Behind them are Cam Sutton and Justin Layne who both provide young depth and athleticism.
Draft need

For this season, cornerback isn’t a need at all. But when you dig into contracts things are a little different. If the Steelers cannot retain Hilton at the end of the season or if Haden retires, Sutton and Layne will be thrust into the starting lineup in 2021. Looking ahead like this could prompt the Steelers to draft a cornerback this weekend for the future.
