Staying up late watching Netflix is harming men's sperm count, scientists warn

Netflix is one of modern life's greatest treasures but if you believe this study from Aarhus University in Denmark it's not so good for baby-making.

The fertility experts at the uni suggest couples looking to conceive should consider limiting distractions that might keep them up at night, such as checking emails or sitting in front of a Netflix box set.

The study also says that getting an early night is better for the body and chances to conceive.

The results were borne out of the study examining the sleep patterns of around 100 male volunteers who were attending fertility clinics in Denmark, 48 of whom had healthy sperm and 56 with low quality sperm.

It found that those with normal bed times were around four times more likely to have healthier sperm than night owls.

“These were men who had been trying to have a baby for about two years and an early bedtime was likely to be important because it allowed them to get more sleep,” said Professor Hans Jakob Ingerslev, co-author of the study from Aarhus University.

“The reasons could be psychological as sleep-deprived men suffer mores stress and that can have an impact on fertility.”

However, the study did not mention the other lifestyle choices of those who stay up late which could also be a factor.
