'Stay safe because this isn't looking great': River Roch at highest levels for a 'long time' as businesses forced to put up flood defences

Businesses in Rochdale have been forced to put their own flood defences as the River Roch is reaching some of the 'highest levels in a long time.'

Torrential rain which has been falling across Greater Manchester for more than 24 hours has meant many rivers are close to bursting.

An 'immediate action' flood warning is in place for the River Roch in Rochdale for affected properties.

The Environment Agency believe there is a possibility of flooding for the area from Roch Valley Way to Yorkshire Street and Albert Royds Street.

Lee Rowlinson, a Director at the Environment Agency said: "The River Roch at Rochdale town centre is reaching some of the highest levels seen in a long time.

"Many of the businesses are helping by putting up their own flood defences.

"We will keep an eye on things but we need everyone to head all advice and guidance, the rain is still coming down.

"The river still looks to be rising so it's really important that you log into the Environment Agency website and look at what the latest information is for you.

Footage seen by the Manchester Evening News shows extremely fast flowing water, causing some local gardens to be submerged in water.

Further rainfall is forecast across the region over the next 48 hours, with river levels in the area expected to remain high until Friday.

People are being urged to avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses, and to stay update with the current situation.
