Stay elegant in spring with a longer skirt

Below-the-knee skirts, also known as midi skirts, are especially popular this spring. Many are light, elegant, and come in beautiful colors and patterns.

"Long skirts are nice to try on. I'm sure people will feel classy," said fashion coordinator Akiko Yamamoto. She added that people who worry about their knees showing signs of age can wear a below-the-knee skirt without any concern.

Midi skirts in bright colors, floral prints and gingham patterns can be seen everywhere this spring. "I suggest skirts with white as a base color, which creates a fresh look. Beautiful, softly colored skirts are another nice option," she said.

Here, Yamamoto shares some of her picks.

The first features a purple and yellow botanical pattern, with flowers and fresh green leaves. But the print does not seem gaudy because it is dominated by white.

This skirt is characterized by its shape, with the front a little shorter than the back.

Coordinated with a fine-knit lavender sweater and light brown pumps, it creates an overall gentle impression.

Yamamoto also recommends a light green one with pleats that get wider down the skirt.

This skirt creates a fresh look when combined with a white shirt and long spring coat. The shiny satin fabric is elegant, and the sleek pleats sway in the spring breeze.

Black-and-white gingham skirts are also popular this year. They are easy to coordinate: For a casual look, wear one with white sneakers, a T-shirt and denim jacket.

People tend to choose black, grey or dark blue clothing to go with a skirt like this. But in light of it being spring, Yamamoto recommends going for similarly vivid colors and patterns as in the skirts.

According to Yamamoto, choose materials different to the skirt when you want to coordinate it with items in similar colors. She says this will add a variety of texture to your outfit.

Skirts with a wide hem can make a great impression, but people who usually wear pants may be a little hesitant. With this in mind, Yamamoto also recommends tight skirts.

She suggests a white skirt with floral lacework that goes well with a beige or yellow knit, and a wraparound paisley skirt that is reversible. With a skirt like the latter, you can dress differently according to your mood each day. They also are suitable for work if you pair them with a jacket.

"Wearing simple tops can make your waist appear slimmer. Enjoy light clothing in spring," Yamamoto said.
