'Stay classy' - Leeds fans make same point after Arsenal goal vs Manchester United

Leeds United fans have weighed in and defended bitter rivals Manchester United after Arsenal scored amid VAR controversy at Old Trafford.

England international Emile Smith Rowe made it advantage Arsenal only 13 minutes into the topsy-turvy Premier League showdown - but it wasn't without question marks.

After colliding with United teammate Fred, long-serving goalkeeper David de Gea was floored in his own penalty area as Smith Rowe added the finishing touch from long-range.

It was a goal which needed intervention and a double check on the much-maligned VAR system.

However, upon consulting technology before making a final decision, referee Martin Atkinson allowed it to stand, while Cristiano Ronaldo went on to settle the scores with a match-winning double as Bruno Fernandes and Martin Odegaard also traded goals.

Citing a similar incident between Leeds and Aston Villa during a Championship fixture in 2019, Whites' supporters are adamant Arsenal should have done what Marcelo Bielsa did on that occasion and allow United to respond via walkthrough.

That famous gesture even earned the charismatic Argentine coach the FIFA Fair Play award.

Here are a selection of comments posted by Leeds fans about Smith Rowe's goal on social media:

@leeds_lord said: "Leeds did nothing wrong. It was just bad sportsmanship - hence why Bielsa gave them a goal. And I agree with him."

@leezdabest87 posted: "[Mikel] Arteta goes on to prove he has no class. If it was Bielsa in his shoes, he would've given back a goal, like he did against Villa a few years ago."

@DaveAndersonTLR added: "We scored when a Villa player was out of the game and Bielsa instructed us to give a goal back to Villa which we duly obliged. Stay classy, Arsenal."

@HarryMerrell_ posted: "Shines a light on the respect that Bielsa showed that day, we could have easily done what Arsenal did."

@Leedzzlad added: "Leeds didn't have to let Villa score. It was Bielsa's decision to give the goal back to Villa."
