Statistician predicts Tottenham's Champions League fate ahead of Manchester City second leg

Who will win the Champions League has predicted by a world famous statistician.

Nate Silver was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world after correctly predicting the outcomes of the 2008 and 2012 US elections - but his background is actually in sports stats.

The 41-year-old rose to fame for developing a system for forecasting performances and career development of Major League Baseball stars before he launched the blog Five Thirty Eight in 2008, using it to correctly call the subsequent two US elections.

His website has now produced a Champions League model and it seems Liverpool stand the best chance of taking home the trophy.

Silver's data model claims they have a 29% chance of winning the tournament - the most in the competition. They also have a 50% chance of making the final.

Barcelona are second favourites, with a 27% chance of winning the tournament and a 47% chance of making the final.

Man City have a 23% chance of winning the tournament and still a 40% chance of making the final despite losing the first leg of their quarter-final to Spurs.

Spurs themselves have only an 8% chance of winning the tournament and a 25% chance of qualifying for the final.

Juventus have just a seven per cent chance of winning the competition and a 20 per cent chance of making the final.

Ajax have been given a five per cent chance of winning the tournament and a 15 per cent chance of getting to the final.

Manchester United's final leg defeat to Barcelona has given them under a one per cent chance of winning the tournament and a two per cent chance of making the final.

Similarly, Porto have under a one per cent chance of winning the tournament and a one per cent chance of reaching the final.

Liverpool 29%

Barcelona 27%

Man City 23%

Tottenham 8%

Juventus 7%

Ajax 5%

Man United 1%

Porto 1%
