Statement on testing as Omicron variant found in Nottinghamshire

Targeted testing is taking place at a school in West Bridgford following the detection of the Omicron covid variant in Nottingham.

Health officials in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire on Monday, November 29, said the targeted testing was being carried out at the school as a "precautionary measure".

The school has not been named.

It follows the detection of one of the first UK cases of the new variant in Nottingham. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said it was linked and connected to travel in southern Africa.

In a joint statement, Jonathan Gribbin, director of public health for Nottinghamshire and Lucy Hubber, director of public health for Nottingham, said they were working closely with UKHSA "to ensure that all appropriate actions to identify close contacts and arrange testing are completed".

They added: “As a precautionary measure, we are conducting targeted testing at a Nottinghamshire school as part of our public health investigations.”

The councils added that there were a number of ways the public could keep themselves and others safe.

They added: "Please follow the government instruction to wear a face covering on public transport and in shops and we would strongly advise also in crowded or indoor settings. In addition, try to keep your distance from people not in your household."
