Statement labels litter 'unacceptable' as Nottingham parks overflow with bottles and cans

The council has labelled leftover waste in parks 'unacceptable' after rubbish was left strewn over popular Nottingham green spaces. Many people had been out enjoying the hot weather but mess was left scattered across The Arboretum and The Forest Recreation Ground on Friday morning (March 25).

People in the area said it was the same situation every year once the weather gets better, with people flocking to beauty spots across the city to enjoy the sun. Empty lager crates, cans and empty bottles were left scattered across The Arboretum, off Waverley Street.

Eddie Curry, Head of Public Realm at Nottingham City Council, said: “It’s great that people want to spend time in our wonderful parks when the weather warms up, however it is totally unacceptable for this amount of litter to be left for us to pick up.

"Parks have been a lifeline for many during the pandemic and our staff have worked tirelessly to keep them open, clean and safe. If bins are full, we don’t think it’s too much to ask for people to take their rubbish away with them and dispose of it responsibly. If items have been carried in, there’s no reason they can’t also be carried away.

“You can see in these pictures that we had anticipated increased visitors to our parks and additional, larger wheelie bins had been made available. These are emptied every day and more frequently in warmer weather."

The mini-heatwave continued on Thursday (March 24) and forecasters predicted highs of 18C, making the city hotter than Barcelona, where temperatures reaching 15C were forecast.
