Statement issued on cause of fire that ripped through Ilkeston industrial building

A serious fire that damaged an industrial building in Ilkeston is believed to have been started accidentally.

Eight fire engines were called to the scene of the blaze at Stanton Recycling, Crompton Road, that started just before 11pm on Tuesday night, March 23.

The fire was so severe that residents in surrounding areas were told to keep windows closed due to the large volume of smoke coming from the building, Derbyshire Live reports.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters from Ilkeston returned to the incident this morning to re-inspect the site, and have now left the site in the hands of the occupiers.

"The most likely cause of the fire is accidental. We have no further information available."

Firefighters worked throughout the night and day to tackle the flames.

Pictures have shown the roof of the building collapsed.

David Diggins, the incident commander at the scene, told Nottinghamshire during the incident: "Due to the layout of the building and the materials contained inside, such as domestic waste because it is a recycling centre, it was quite a hazardous incident for us.

"Everything was done quite defensively from the external parts of the building, and getting water into the centre of a large building was quite tricky at times.

"Fortunately our crews have worked tirelessly throughout the night and we have managed to get on top of the fire. There has been some signs of structural collapse so what we are doing now is take a very cautious approach.
