The state welfare committee will meet on Thursday to review eligibility criteria for the state welfare card scheme following concerns that some low-income elderly parents have lost benefits because their children claimed tax deductions on their behalf.
Finance permanent secretary Lavaron Sangsnit said the meeting of the Pracharat Welfare Committee for Grassroots Economy and Society, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas, will consider prime ministerial directives regarding the screening criteria for welfare card recipients.
The review focuses on a controversial rule under which parents may lose eligibility if their children claim parental tax deductions, even when the children do not provide financial support.
Mr Lavaron said any changes would require cabinet approval.
