Health officials reported 521 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Illinois on Memorial Day, as well as an additional 33 deaths.

The total new cases reported Monday was the lowest daily count since since June 22, when 462 were reported, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The case count was diagnosed from 25,692 new coronavirus tests, the IDPH reported. The seven-day rolling average of positive cases was 2%.

Still, the figures are a reminder that, even as the state’s daily case counts continue to fall, the virus has not been eliminated and continues to spread. The new deaths reported Monday included 27 people in Cook County.

On Sunday, state officials announced that 50% of Illinois adults were fully vaccinated and more than two-thirds have received at least one dose of their vaccines. Experts estimate that it would require at least 80% of the population to have immunity, either through previously being infected or being vaccinated, to reach the threshold for herd immunity.

So far, 11,291,906 vaccines have been administered in Illinois, with a seven-day rolling average of 50,162 doses administered daily.
