State records huge spike to 825 cases

There has been a huge spike in COVID-19 in NSW with 825 cases announced by the state Premier on Saturday.

At least 58 cases of the cases recorded in the 24 hours to 8pm Friday were infectious in the community. There were more than 124,000 tests recorded in the 24 hour period.

Three people have died overnight, including two men, aged in their 80s and 90s and a woman aged in her 90s.

The man in his 80s was fully vaccinated, while the man in his 90s was not vaccinated. Both had significant health issues. The woman had received one dose of vaccine.

These bring the total deaths in this outbreak to 68.

Deputy Premier John Barilaro praised the Hunter New England area, where there was one case reported at Jesmond. The person was in isolation and linked to a known case.

He said the results in the Hunter area were a "great example" of how the lockdown was working.

There are 32 people in the Hunter New England area in hospital, none are in ICU.

Mr Barilaro said there were "grave concerns" about the state's west and far west with 38 cases in Western NSW and 14 in Far West local health district.

NSW Health's Dr Marianne Gale said there are currently 516 cases in hospital, 85 of which are in intensive care and 29 requiring ventilation. Of the 85 in intensive care, 76 not vaccinated, and the remaining have had one dose.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said 120,000 people were vaccinated on Friday, which has resulted in almost 30 per cent of the state's population being fully vaccinated.
