State police: Boy, 10, dies, another badly hurt in Gurnee wreck

May 24--One of two boys who was seriously injured when they were thrown from a sport utility vehicle on Interstate 94 on Saturday morning near Gurnee has died, according to Illinois State Police.

The 10-year-old boy, of Gurnee, died at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, according to a statement from state police. His name was not being made public.

Five other occupants in the SUV were also hospitalized.

It happened about 9:35 a.m. on northbound I-94 near Gurnee, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Carlita Joe said.

A Lincoln Navigator struck a median wall, and the two boys, 10 and 11, were ejected from a back window of the vehicle and onto the shoulder, Joe said.

The vehicle crossed over all four lanes of traffic and came to a stop on the right shoulder.

The 11-year-old boy, from Des Plaines, was seriously injured and also taken to Condell, according to Joe.

A total of four adults and three children were inside the Navigator at the time of the wreck, according to state police.

Two adults suffered serious injuries and were taken to Vista Medical Center in Waukegan while the other two adults and the child who was not ejected -- an 11-year-old Des Plaines girl -- suffered minor injuries and were also taken to Condell, according to state police.

The SUV's driver, identified by state police as Silvia Jacob, 50, of Green Oaks, was cited with improper lane usage and failure to use child restraint, according to state police.

Motorists were being diverted off the interstate at Illinois Highway 176-Buckley Road but all lanes were back open as of about 4 p.m.

No other vehicles were involved, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
