Business Stream wins back £200m public water contract

Edinburgh-based Business Stream has won back the framework for public sector water and waste water services in Scotland.

The water retailer won the three-year contract , £200 million, having lost it to Anglian Water in 2016. Its new deal covers local authorities, NHS Scotland, Scottish Fire & Rescue, Police Scotland, Scottish Prison Service, universities and colleges and Scottish Government facilities.

Business Stream is to support initiatives to reduce water use and the Scottish Government's target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045.

Business Stream chief executive Jo Dow said: "We are absolutely delighted to have won back the Scottish Government public sector framework contract. We have a strong track record of working with the public sector and over the years have developed a suite of value-added services to meet their needs.

"We are now looking forward to working in partnership with public sector organisations across Scotland, providing our expertise and services to help them save time, money and water."

Business Stream, a subsidiary of state-owned Scottish Water, was formed for the regulation of the water retail market north of the border in 2008. It held the first awarded framework between 2011 and 2015. Since losing the contract, it has become the UK's second largest water retailer, having taken over Yorkshire Water Business Services and secured more than £280 million of new contracts since the English retail water market was opened up in 2017.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: "This is the third time this contract has been competed. Following a robust evaluation process, Scottish Water Business Stream Ltd were identified as offering the best balance of quality and price for the public purse."
