A boy who has been bullied because his last name is Trump is among specials guests set to join the first lady for the State of the Union address.

Joshua Trump, a sixth-grade student in Delaware, was among 17 people invited by Donald Trump to attend the speech, which will be delivered by the president on Tuesday.

The schoolboy’s parents had raised concerns about his safety with the Delaware school district after students on his school bus chanted his last name.

Alice Marie Johnson, 63, who had her life sentence for a drug offence commuted by the president after reality star Kardashian lobbied for her release will also attend.

Among others named as special guests were Judah Samet, a survivor of a synagogue in Pittsburgh, and Timothy Matson, a SWAT team officer who responded to the attack.

State of the Union guests typically serve to highlight administration policies.

Ms Johnson's case spotlights legislation Mr Trump signed last year to give judges more discretion in sentencing some drug offenders. And Joshua’s case highlights a bullying prevention strategy that is a key element of Melania’s "Be Best" initiative

The White House said the president will call for optimism and unity in address, using the moment to attempt a reset after two years of partisanship and deeply personal attacks.

Counselor Kellyanne Conway said Mr Trump would use his speech "to call for an end to the politics of resistance, retribution."

"He's calling for cooperation," she said, adding that Mr Trump will point to examples of where this has happened on his watch.

Officials said the president is also expected to highlight infrastructure, trade and prescription drug pricing as areas in which the parties could work together.

Releasing the names of the special guests, the White House said in statement: “This year’s guests come from all different walks of life, and each has an incredible story to tell.

“No matter their background, each one has something important in common: They represent the very best of America.”
