'State of the art' playground could be built on former bowling green in Tameside

A former bowling green in Hyde could be transformed into a playground with ‘state of the art’ equipment for both children and adults.

Housing association Onward Homes have submitted a planning application to Tameside council to create the play area at Fields Farm Road in Hattersley.

According to the developer, the bowling green has not been in use for ‘several years’, and the council confirmed it was last used in 2010.

The plans come as part of the wider regeneration of Hattersley being driven by a partnership between Tameside council, Onward Homes and Homes England.

It’s funded by the Hattersley Public Realm Fund, provided by residential development partner Barratt Developments.

Playgrounds are currently shut across the borough due to coronavirus but bosses say the new facility will be a ‘welcome addition’ when they reopen.

It will feature a playhouse, lookout towers, slide, net climber, bridges, an accessible roundabout and a musical feature.

And there’s also outdoor gym equipment included as part of the plans for adults to tackle chin-ups, sit-ups and step-ups.

The existing fence around the bowling green is proposed to be replaced with a 1.2 metre high steel fence and combination gate.

Councillor Oliver Ryan, cabinet member for finance and economic growth, said: “This exciting new playground will feature state of the art equipment enabling children to play together in the fresh air and get exercise while having fun.

“It will also aid development and there’s even equipment for adults to have a quick workout in the outdoors to help all the family keep fit and healthy. I’d like to thank Coun Janet Cooper and Coun Jacqueline Owen for all their work in helping make this happen.

“It’s just part of our investment in both Hattersley and playgrounds across Tameside to help create a more attractive, healthier borough that’s a welcoming place to live and work.”

If the application is granted permission, equipment will be installed by Playdale Playgrounds who has also designed the play area.

Eddie Vickers, neighbourhood delivery manager at Onward Homes, said: “We are delighted to bring this site back into use, which will be a valuable addition to local residents of all ages.”
