State-of-the-art outdoor gym to be fitted in Bolton's biggest park

Bolton's largest park is set to replace its old wooden playing equipment with a brand new outdoor gym.

The plans for Leverhulme Park were first revealed to the public by local councillor Adele Warren at a meeting of Breightmet Area Forum.

Drawings show that the gym will start close to the car park and will run the length of the adjacent cricket pitch, before ending where the path restarts, near where the former zip wire started.

Equipment mooted for the first phase of construction an air walker, classical bike, elliptical cross trainer, rower, pull down challenger, chest press, leg press, sit-up bench, cross country skier and a body twister.

In the future, it is suggested that there could also be a leg lift station, small tai chi spinners, a stepper and an air skier. Although the plans do state: "actual equipment choice to be confirmed".

The plans have been supported by both Breightmet and Little Lever/Darcy Lever councillors as the park borders their wards.

Coun Warren said: "I am really pleased that we have been able to work together and bring these plans forward. A lot of planning has gone on behind the scenes.

"The equipment purchase has been approved and we await delivery and installation."

Little Lever and Darcy Lever councillor Sean Hornby said the idea is that the facility will be used by people of all ages.

He added: "I'm very excited. When it's up, it can be used by anyone, whether they're eight or 80.

"We put the zip wire up in around 2008 but it grew tired so we've had to replace it.

"It's costing between £40,000 and £50,000, and it's being jointly paid for with Breightmet and Darcy Lever ward funding. I want to get one put up in Mytham Park as well so we're looking at getting the funding for that as well."
