Justice Minister Masako Mori will dispatch her state minister to Lebanon to seek cooperation over realizing a trial for former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn in Japan.
Mori announced State Justice Minister Hiroyuki Yoshiie's four-day visit from Saturday, following a Cabinet meeting on Friday.
Ghosn, who has been indicted in Japan for alleged financial misconduct, fled to the Middle Eastern country late last year.
During the visit, Yoshiie will meet with the country's justice minister, among other officials.
Mori said Yoshiie's visit aims to "gain correct understanding" from the Lebanon side regarding Japan's criminal justice system, because the 65-year-old former executive has sharply criticized it since he arrived in Lebanon.
However, Mori showed a cautious stance over whether Japan will ask Lebanon to extradite Ghosn. "We have to deal with this issue by taking into account various environments and pieces of information," she said.
