CHENNAI: A single mother, who was harassed by Pazhavanthangal police to ‘admit’ that her college-going son had been involved in a robbery, was granted a compensation of 2.9 lakh by the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC).
Besides directing the state government to recover the amount from the police involved, commission member A Chittranjan Mohandass directed the government to organise training programs to police personnel to sensitise them to act in a humane manner while dealing with suspects of crime and their family members, particularly those from vulnerable section.
According to M Dhanalakshmi, a single mother, her son was studying BCA 2nd year in a private college residing in a rented house in Pallavaram. On August 1, 2020 her son injured his legs after jumping from the third floor of her apartment.
While he was admitted and taking treatment in the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, police personnel from Pazhavanthangal police station came to the hospital to arrest her son on the allegation that he had stolen gold jewellery.
Since both the mother and the son denied the allegations, they were taken to a lodge in Nanganallur and were threatened with a case under the Immoral Trafficking Act if they fail to accept the robbery crime.
