State funeral for Lady Flo Bjelke-Petersen

The Bjelke-Petersen family has welcomed the offer of a Commonwealth state funeral or memorial service for former senator Lady Flo Bjelke-Petersen.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk agreed to the offer today.

The Premier's office confirmed the service would take place according to the wishes of the family.

Her son John Bjelke-Petersen welcomed the offer.

"We're honoured that her long service to Queensland and the local community will be recognised."

He said it would be held at the Kingaroy Town Hall.

It is the same place where her husband and former Queensland Premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen was farewelled with a state funeral after he died at the age of 94 in April 2005.

Lady Bjelke-Petersen died aged 97, in her hometown of Kingaroy after a short illness on Wednesday.

She will be buried alongside Sir Joh at the family's property in Kingaroy.

John Bjelke-Petersen said his mother was devoted to her hometown.

"Mum was actually the one who was known around here as the member for Barambah," he said.

"My father was the one elected, but my mother was the one that did the groundwork in the electorate."

Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington said Lady Bjelke-Petersen was a rock of the community.

"She was a wonderful mentor to me and she always gave me wonderful encouragement and support."
