State Cup mega gallery: two down as Maitland eye a clean sweep of silverware

Maitland will quickly return their focus to NPLW after adding another piece of Northern NSW Football silverware to the club's trophy cabinet.

The Magpies narrowly lost the League Cup final and NPLW grand final to Charlestown Azzurri last year, along with NPLW premiership in a nail-biting finish to last season.

This year, they are determined to collect every trophy on offer and have made a good start by winning the Charity Shield against a very different looking Azzurri in February and claiming the State Cup at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility (LMRFF) on Sunday night.

In their fourth game of the day, the Magpies were ruthless in beating Broadmeadow 5-0 in the 50-minute final.

They scored three goals in as many minutes leading into half-time to set up the win and become the first club to claim the State Cup, which is contested over three days at LMRFF by premier and community clubs throughout northern NSW, three times after also winning it in 2021 and 2023.

The Magpies and Azzurri were named joint winners last year after the final was abandoned due to a serious injury.

"The players that were there last year were keen to try and win everything that was on offer," Maitland coach Ben Horgan said on Monday.

"We've got two under our belts and now we've just got to make sure we refocus and keep working towards the league."

Maitland's focus is now on Azzurri at Cooks Square Park this Sunday and the premiership.

The Magpies were on a 12-match unbeaten run until losing 2-1 to New Lambton in the last round of NPLW on June 27.

The result left them and New Lambton, who have played one more match, level on 34 points with five rounds remaining in the season proper.

"My sense at the end of the game against New Lambton was we were disappointed with the result, but we were kind of realistic that it wasn't a poor performance," Horgan said.

"We still had plenty of territory and created plenty of chances. We just weren't good enough in the final third and we needed to tighten up a little bit defensively.

"There wasn't too much to sort of panic about. We just needed to improve in a couple of areas and it's given a chance in State Cup to work on some of those things."

Clubs can use up to 25 players during the State Cup and Maitland heavily rotated their squad while Broadmeadow coach Jason Konjarski stuck to a core 18 or 19.

While the final scoreline was a blowout in the end, Magic took plenty from the weekend as well.

They are fifth by goal difference on 12 points and stuck in what appears a four-way battle for fourth place with Adamstown (12 points), Azzurri (10) and Newcastle Olympic (10).

Magic, who had the bye in the last round of NPLW and have not played a league game since June 19, host third-placed Lake Macquarie (21) at Magic Park on Friday night after beating City 2-0 in the Cup semi-finals on Sunday.

"We've got a month between NPLW games, so it was the first time we'd played a football match in three weeks," Konjarski said.

"But it was a good weekend. It was good to get minutes into the legs, good to get some good results, some good scoring, good attacking opportunities, and it was just good for a bit of team bonding too.

"It was a demanding weekend and I'm really proud of the girls. They really put the effort in.

"Realistically, we need a win three or four out of five now because Adamstown have hit quite a bit of form."

University of Newcastle beat Cooks Hill United 1-1 (4-2) on penalties to claim the Community Shield for the first time.

The Women's State Cup has been running since 2017 and was contested by 18 clubs this year.

In NPL Men over the weekend, late substitute Max Wettig produced a last-minute winner to seal Weston's 3-2 win over Lambton Jaffas.

Cooks Hill beat Azzurri 4-0, Maitland were 3-1 winners over Adamstown, Valentine took an important 3-2 victory against Kahibah and leaders Magic beat Olympic 2-1 to open up an eight-point gap over second-placed Belmont Swansea (32) with four rounds to play.

The match between Belswans and fifth-placed Edgeworth (29) was postponed.
