Starving seagulls with no chips head to golf greens for worms

The lack of dropped chips and thrown away pizza is causing gulls to take desperate measures.

The hungry seabirds have now had to take to golf course greens to try and find seed and worms.

Greenkeepers on South Ayrshire municipal courses are fighting a losing battle trying to keep them off the putting surfaces.

On the Lochgreen and Fullarton courses in Troon, they have scrunched up reams of plastic and pegged it to the greens. But as our picture shows above, the seagulls need to feed.

But one said: “It’s a losing battle, they are not scared of the plastic at all.

“It has been so dry lately worms are not coming to the surface, but our greens are automatically watered.

“And you could say we no longer have pitch marks, but peck marks.”

Vast flocks have been seen on some the courses, and dozens on individual greens.

South Ayrshire Council claimed it was not causing a problem.

A spokesman said: “We are not aware of a gull increase on our golf courses, as a result of the lockdown. “People are welcome to walk on our fairways as part of their exercise routine.

“But we are asking them to stay off the greens and avoid sheeting we have installed to protect damaged turf.”
