Rosamund Heathcote, managing director of Borough Broth Co, explains why the business should win the Startup of the Year category of the Guardian Small Business Showcase competition:
We are a small startup making big strides in the food world. We have designed a sustainable working model to create the highest quality organic British bone broths in the UK. We are also working on a manufacturing process to ensure we produce a limited amount of waste/landfill.
We believe our products will transform the way people cook. We will do so by returning them back to the traditional ways of cooking, removing preservatives and over-processed meat substitutes in the form of stock cubes, and provide traditional, unadulterated bone broth just as restaurants, home cooks and our ancestors would have used. Everyone should be entitled to real food and our goal is to keep our products premium and British yet affordable.
We started in May 2014 and launched in Selfridges food hall in November exclusively. We are shortly launching our online store and we’re about to sign with an exclusive wholesaler distributing to high profile and specialist retailers such as Ocado and wholefoods.
Our turnover was £10,000 in the last tax year, but we are about to grow considerably over the next two months. We have now partnered with another London based food company, Wild City, and plan to expand aggressively over the next month creating more London based jobs. Our plans are to turnover £20,000 per month by April 2016.
All entries which meet the competition criteria are published and our judging panel select a shortlist of the top three for each category. Winners are announced at an awards ceremony in summer 2016.
