Thelittlebritishcompany.co.uk was launched on September 23 2013. We are an online retailer selling British designed gifts and homeware. The gift industry is a very competitive market with some very large players, so how on earth does a small business stand out and get noticed? Working hard and smart is imperative. We didn’t have a massive budget for marketing as most of our budget had been spent on stock and website development so we had to be very savvy.
We have tried Google AdWords, affiliation, social media etc, and so far social media has definitely come up tops. It’s a great way of getting customers to your website and doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. One of the tests we did via Facebook was to boost one of our products to our 8,000 followers. We had a budget of £7.00 so we didn’t expect much return but we were so wrong. This post alone generated 1,100 likes, 427 shares and even better we had 150 sales all in one day. Most people didn’t just buy the product we featured but topped it up with other items; social media does work.
We have also been featured in Good Housekeeping, Women’s Health, Craft magazine, Life in Haslemere - the list goes on and on. Being a small business we have had to do all our own PR, so we feel very proud of our achievements.
