Smythe Consulting (SCG) secured a consultancy assignment lasting 15 months with our client Brunelcare, a healthcare provider and housing association with 1,200 staff. Our brief was to upskill the HR team, increase the impact of the HR team within the business and strengthen the HR voice at a senior level.
Initially we worked closely with the HR team spending time understanding the income and expenditure statement and some of the drivers of investment and spending.
The HR team began to work in a different way, demonstrating the return on investment of their services, presenting and costing out alternative advice options, building an understanding of the fundamentals that drive the various business units enabling advice to be tailored accordingly. Consequently the team immediately began to receive good feedback from managers on the quality of their service and the reputation of the HR team dramatically improved.
We worked with the HR team on understanding the causes of employee turnover. It became apparent that our client was losing people unnecessarily due to a lack of career development, so we set about understanding the skills profile of staff, their aspirations and opening up opportunities for development across the company. SCG coached the management team on the value of workforce planning.
In the next financial year the HR team is aiming to add up to £150,000 back on the bottom line by reducing turnover in this area.
This assignment strengthened SCG’s consultancy business demonstrating how we can transform a HR team within a mid-sized company.
