Smart Separations has developed a revolutionary filtration system that can be tailored to suit many different applications in the underdeveloped yet global £48bn separation/filtration industry.
The London-based startup, founded by Dr Hugo Macedo in July 2013, will provide a more controlled, versatile, and low-cost solution to several industries, including blood donations, stem cell research, improving air quality, and even food and drink processing.
Exactly 18 months ago, this seemed a far-fetched idea, difficult to convince anyone – and who could blame them? The only available resources were a garage, family and friends and a great desire to change the world. After reading Visionary Business by Marc Allen, Dr Macedo learned that if you can dream it, you can achieve it.
Having already received £150,000 of UK government grants for market validation and product development, Smart Separations has a patent-pending technology on a novel method to produce resistant ceramic filters with holes in the range of 1 to 30um (or the thickness of a hair).
Having recently received financial support from a business angel, and with a highly skilled and diverse team behind it, the company is now developing its strategic go-to-market plan.
