Pip & Nut is an emerging natural food brand that’s on a mission to put the nut back into nutrition. We make a range of nut butters that are available in jars and innovative on-the-go squeeze packs that launched into Selfridges in January 2015.
Launching a food brand is never easy and I took pretty drastic steps to get Pip & Nut to market. Back in May 2014 I entered a competition called Escape to the Shed, run by Escape the City, who were offering one startup the chance to live rent-free – in a shed – for three months.
There were 3,000 entrants to the competition and amazingly Pip & Nut won! So that summer, I went from having a secure job and a normal flat, to what can only be described as a glorified garden shed to launch a nut butter brand.
This opportunity enabled me to work full-time on the company and over the course of the summer I built up to a crowdfunding campaign on Crowdcube. When the pitch went live I had an original target of £100,000 and within just nine days I’d hit my target and overfunded the company. In fact, the pitch was so popular that it took just 24 hours for the pitch to go from £38,000 to £120,000!
With the finance in place, the products moved into production and are now stocked in some of the UK’s top stores with national retailers at my heels and a dedicated fan-base.
