Startling Celtic and Rangers Champions League chance creation statistics laid bare

THE Champions League has been an eye-opening experience for both Celtic and Rangers this term.

Ange Postecoglou's side are already out of Europe as they have registered just two draws against Shakhtar Donetsk over the group stage.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's Gers still have a slim chance of reaching the Europe League, if they beat Ajax 5-0 at Ibrox next week.

Despite this the Govan outfit have conceded 19 goals and scored just one, meaning they could end their European campaign with the worst Champions League group stage performance record in history.

Statistics by leading sports data firm StatsBomb have revealed just how poorly Rangers have performed in front of goal in Europe this term.

In five group-stage games, the club have a total expected goals figure of just 2.87xG, with just one goal scored.

Expected Goals (xG) is a metric designed to measure the probability of a shot resulting in a goal.

An xG model uses historical information from thousands of shots with similar characteristics to estimate the likelihood of a goal on a scale between 0 and 1.

In comparison to their rivals, Celtic have created a 7.39xG, but they have scored just three goals. This shows that Postecoglou's outfit have majorly underperformed in front of goal during their European campaign, backing up the "wasteful" narrative.
