Startled workmen discover £20k drugs haul buried underneath famer's gatepost

Two workmen digging out an old gate post were stunned to discover a £20k haul of drugs hidden underneath.

The pair were working on deserted rural land between Barnstaple and Bideford in north Devon when they  found an old plastic carrier bag spilling over with the stash of cocaine.

They were believed to have been carrying out work on May 22 for another farmer when they found the Costcutter bag, which looked like it had been been hidden for a while.

The farmers contacted the police who seized the drugs, reports Devon Live.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "On Wednesday 22 May a quantity of a controlled substance with a street value of between £10k and £20k was located in a rural location by two workmen replacing a gate post close to the Old Bideford Road in North Devon.

"Upon discovering the substance the police were contacted and the substance was seized as evidence.

"This is obviously a significant find that has temporarily disrupted the supply of illegal substances into North Devon.

"The matter is currently under investigation."

Police said specialist drug dogs did a sweep of the area but found nothing more.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police on 101 quoting crime reference number CR/045209/19.
