'Started off on fire' - Aston Villa's Conor Hourihane revels in early Swansea City impact as he singles out team-mate for praise

Conor Hourihane says he's delighted to be back amongst the goals after he "started off on fire" at Swansea City.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder joined Steve Cooper's side in January from Aston Villa and made an immediate impact at the club - on and off the pitch.

At 30, Hourihane brings experience to a side that is bursting with youthful exuberance but perhaps lacks the necessary knowhow to scrap at the end of a gruelling Championship season.

Hourihane, along with the likes of Andre Ayew and Ryan Bennett, add that bit of composure, which will be vital with Swansea heading into the business end of the campaign.

And they are very well placed too, with Saturday's 1-0 win over Luton maintaining their push for automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Swansea sit third in the standings, tied with Watford on 69 points ahead of a tough week for Cooper and his charges.

Bournemouth and Cardiff City are up next in a stern test of their promotion crenditials, and it was thanks to Hourihane's third-minute goal at Kenilworth Road that has kept the heat on the Hornets and Brentford at the summit.

And the Villa man was over the moon to score his first goal in five games, having initially scored four times in his opening five league matches following his loan move from Villa Park.

“It’s a massive three points on the road once again,” said the 30-year-old. “The clean sheet is great too – it’s so important because it gives you the platform to win games.

“Scoring the goal is obviously great for me. I started off on fire, and then went on a dry spell. It was nice to get another one – the gaffer said I was due one, so it was good to find the net again."

It was a difficult afternoon all round in Bedfordshire, with the Hatters dangerous from set-pieces and conditions on the ground not ideal, with Swansea having a swirling wind and a heavy pitch to contend with.

But Swansea's goal was a bit of quality on a day where steel was required, and Hourihane was full of praise for the man who set him up.

Yan Dhanda's neat cut-back set the midfielder up perfectly to drill home from close range.

“Yan was fantastic in setting it up and putting it on a plate for me," he added.

"We spoke in the changing room afterwards that he did the same for me against Rotherham.

“He sees those passes very well, and it was a great assist.”
