Start-up Commonplace secures new funding to expand

A start-up that provides tech allowing property developers and councils to collect community feedback on developments in their local area, has secured new venture capital funding to double staff numbers in London.

Aldgate-based Commonplace, which allows people to view and comment on everything from new planned buildings to cycle lanes, has raised £3 million from London-based investor Beringea.

That funding will be used to expand the six-year-old business.

It has 20 staff in the capital and expects to boost that to 40 in the next 12 months. Investments will also be made in product and marketing.

Mike Saunders, co-founder and chief executive of Commonplace, said: “This round of investment will enable us to engage millions more people as councils, developers and the government seek to address housing shortages and the pressing need for infrastructure.”

The company has worked previously with a number of London boroughs and property developers such as Grosvenor.

Eyal Malinger, investment director at Beringea, said: “Commonplace helps create a dialogue about how we can adapt neighbourhoods for the better, creating safety and economic prosperity in the process.”
