Chesterfield have confirmed that they will land a 'significant' sum if Leeds United are promoted to the Premier League this season.
The National League side endured a tough couple of seasons in the fifth tier after losing their Football League status in 2018, but stand to cash in as a part of the deal that saw Liam Cooper arrive at Elland Road six years ago.
Cooper joined Leeds in August 2014 for a reported fee of £750,000 and has gone on to establish himself as club captain and a key player in the club's promotion charge under Marcelo Bielsa.
The 28-year-old is closing in on 200 appearances for the club, and the Spireites are hopeful that they will finally be able to cash in on one of the clauses in their transfer deal.
The club's company secretary Ashley Carson addressed the clause in an update on their official website, revealing a six-figure sum will be due should Cooper lead Leeds back to the top flight - a sizable windfall for a non-league side.
"I have been asked about Liam Cooper’s contract and if anything was put into it for CFC to gain any bonus if Leeds United were to gain promotion, whilst Liam was still a player for them," he wrote.
"Well, for all of you who 'hate Leeds', I suggest you start cheering for them. We do have a clause that pays us a significant bonus if they gain promotion to the Premier League. As you can imagine, the contract is subject to confidentiality, no surprise, but it is a six-figure sum."
Leeds, who sit second in the table behind West Brom on goal difference, face third-placed Fulham this weekend, knowing that a win would open up a ten-point gap over the Cottagers with seven games to play.
