Stars sparkle at the Oscars 2023 on new champagne-coloured red carpet as viewers complain they "hate it" as they spot problems

The biggest night in Hollywood, the 95th Annual Academy Awards, kicked off in style with some of the most famous stars on earth walking the Oscars red carpet - except it isn't red this year. For the first time since 1961, the Oscars has a champagne-coloured alternative.

The red carpet is synonymous with the Oscars, but to mix-up tradition the carpet is a much lighter colour, reportedly for the transition from daytime arrivals to an elegant evening setting.

Supermodel Ashley Graham was one of the early arrivals on the new carpet as she arrived in a black cut-out detail gown. Elizabeth Olsen also chose a classic black dress with crimson lip colour and Vanessa Hudgens wore a strapless black and white gown for the ceremony.

Jamie Lee Curtis, nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, sparkled in a figure-hugging cream and silver dress at the awards, hosted by late night chat show host Jimmy Kimmel at the Dolby Theater.

Cara Delevingne brought back memories of the red carpet in a gorgeous Elie Saab gown with oversized bow detail on one shoulder and split to the thigh detail. She teamed it with matching red heels. Florence Pugh stepped out in a jaw-dropping gown dress over black shorts with pockets.

Sofia Carson wowed in a white gown and model Winnie Harlow dazzled in a neon yellow dress, while Brendan Fraser, nominated for Best Actor for his lead role in The Whale. looked dapper in his bow-tie and black and white suit.

The stars might have been sporting winning looks, but the carpet got the thumbs-down from fans of the traditional red. @mizjawnson tweeted: "There is too much white/off-white for that carpet/backdrop. More color please." And @chrissiemac2424 sniped: "The champagne carpet is throwing me it just looks like a dirty rug."

@JackieBrownNow pointed out: "The 'champagne' carpet is photographing as a really basic looking beige/tan carpet." And @TqwanaBrown said: "Harry Shum Jr. and Jamie Lee Curtis are blending into the background. This carpet is doing no favors to fashion."

@jamiebgolden complained: "The red carpet being champagne-colored makes it look like your nana's living room where she'll make you oatmeal cookies after you help her get something from the attic." And @DamianSerbu demanded: "Oscars I don’t approve of champagne carpet! RED!"

@xina agreed: "For the record, I’m thumbs-down on the champagne carpet. Bring back the red! The photos looks so beige and washed out." @JoSchneller said: "Not a fan of the champagne carpet. #Oscars Looks muddy already." @sassybibrarian commented: "I hate the #Oscars beige carpet. It’s not 'champagne.' It’s BEIGE"

@ak247__messaged: "I hate the champagne carpet." @SassyMamainLA complained: "That champagne carpet is already on my worst list. It's dulling the outfits and washing people out in photos. Hate it." And @ElenaM52 said: "I hate this 'champagne' carpet. It washes out anyone who’s wearing light/pastel colours and is making some outfits look plain/boring when they would’ve popped on the red carpet."

But @charlespetty1 said: "Personally, I love the pre-1961 champagne color carpet. The red more often than not clashes." And @DeniseTCurtin wrote: "The new-look ‘champagne carpet’ is definitely fresher, but it’s not giving."
