Stars' rain-affected derby win a WBBL consolation prize

Wet weather has brought an end to drab WBBL campaigns from both Melbourne sides in the Stars' rain-affected derby win.

Annabel Sutherland top-scored with 36 as the Stars were bowled out for 118 at the MCG on Saturday night and Kim Garth's two early wickets in the Renegades' run chase gave the hosts the upper hand.

Garth reduced the Renegades to 2-12 from four overs before rain temporarily forced players off the field and sent most fans in a crowd of 5933 heading for cover.

Play returned for only another nine balls as Hayley Matthews (17no off 10) tried valiantly to put the Renegades in front on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.

But the visitors' 2-27 from 5.3 overs was still eight runs short of a par score when rain ended the match early.

The result left the Stars (6-8) and Renegades (2-12) filling the bottom two places on the table.

It was the Stars' fourth win from their past five matches, giving them a taste of what might have been had they started the season in better form.

"You can look at it that way or you can just try and take some positives out of the season," player-of-the-match Garth said.

"It was really pleasing for us that we finished so well and kind of got a glimpse at what this group can do.

"We're very disappointed that we couldn't start the season off a little bit better but it was nice to find some consistency towards the back end."

Garth (2-2) dismissed Renegades openers Tammy Beaumont (two) and Emma de Broughe (five) after stand-in captain Sutherland lifted the Stars to a respectable total batting first.

Sutherland hit six boundaries in her 36 off 28 balls and put on a club record fourth-wicket stand of 45 with Tess Flintoff (22 off 23).

Both of the Stars' top two run-scorers were out caught off Indian offspinner Harmanpreet Kaur (2-13).

West Indies star Matthews (2-20), Georgia Prestwidge (2-27) and Georgia Wareham (2-18) also claimed multiple wickets for the Renegades.

The rain-affected match was a disappointing end to former Australian international Jess Duffin's cricket career after the cross-code athlete announced her retirement pre-match.

Duffin didn't bat or bowl for the Renegades in her final appearance but claimed a catch that dismissed Alice Capsey for a second-ball duck off Prestwidge's bowling.

"When it went up I though, 'is that really mine?'," Duffin said.

"You always want to contribute and knowing you're batting seven, eight or nine, it isn't always going to happen.

"It was a little bit nice (to take the catch)."

The Stars again took the field without former Australian captain Meg Lanning, who sat out the final three games of the season for personal reasons.

Lanning announced her retirement from international cricket earlier this month, saying she had lost the hunger to perform at international level.
