Stars miss chance to clinch playoff spot, fall to Canucks in shootout

VANCOUVER, British Columbia_The Dallas Stars missed a chance to clinch a playoff spot on Saturday night, losing to Vancouver 3-2 in a shootout to snap a seven-game road winning streak.

Dallas went seven points up on ninth-place Arizona for a playoff spot in the Western Conference and can still clinch a postseason spot Sunday night if Minnesota beats the Coyotes. Andrew Cogliano and Alexander Radulov scored for the Stars and Anton Khudobin made 29 saves.

Markus Granlund scored the game-winner for Vancouver in the eighth round of the shootout.

The Stars fell behind 2-0 in the first period after goals from Tim Schaller and Sven Baertschi. Schaller's goal was his third of the season, and all three have come against Dallas. Baertschi scored after going around John Klingberg and beating Khudobin from the right dot.

Cogliano's goal was his third with Dallas, and came after he hit posts in Edmonton on Thursday and earlier in the game against Vancouver. Radulov's equalizer was deflected by Vancouver's Troy Stecher.

Before the game, Stars coach Jim Montgomery preached the little things instead of talking about the bigger goal of clinching a playoff spot.

"It's to focus on our details and our process," Montgomery said. "We all know what's at stake tonight and we all want to achieve it, but we got to stay in the moment and focus on our process and details that give us success."
