Stars historic penalty kill streak snapped in 2-1 loss to Oilers

DALLAS _ The streak is over, but the Dallas Stars penalty kill was still busy Monday night.

During the Stars' 2-1 loss to Edmonton on Monday night, the Oilers snapped an impressive stretch for the Dallas penalty kill by scoring a power play goal in the first period, when Alex Chiasson tapped a no-look backhand pass to Leon Draisaitl on the doorstep.

The Stars had not given up a power play goal at home since Oct. 29, a stretch of 41 straight kills that was the longest home streak in franchise history. Dallas killed the other five penalties on the night to go 5 for 6 against Edmonton.

Of the six penalties, five were tripping calls against the Stars. The Oilers were also called for two trips out of their three penalties.

"Some of them were good calls," defenseman Andrej Sekera said. "Some of them happen. It is what it is."

"It is what it is," forward Jason Dickinson said. "What were they, all tripping penalties? You put your stick in a bad spot, even if it's not the best penalty called, your stick's in the area. If we're a little bit better with our sticks, maybe we won't get those calls."

"We just kept putting ourselves in a position where the referee had to make that decision," interim coach Rick Bowness said.

The loss snapped a five-game point streak for Dallas, who received a goal from Tyler Seguin with 2:37 left in the game to climb within one goal. The Stars had a late push in a 6-on-5 situation, but couldn't find the equalizer.

Mikko Koskinen made 34 saves for Edmonton, which also received a goal from Zack Kassian in the first period.

Overall, the Stars had killed the last 16 penalties, a six-game streak that was the franchise's longest streak since a seven-game stretch in Oct. 2017. Edmonton entered Monday with the top-ranked power play in the league at 32.4%, while Dallas' penalty kill was the league's second-best at home.

"We did a good job killing them," Bowness said, "but it destroyed the rhythm of our team."
