Kevin Costner, Shirley MacLaine and Jennifer Aniston are to star in a pseudo-sequel to Mike Nichols's Oscar-winning 1967 tale of seduction and youthful rebellion, The Graduate.
Aniston will play an impressionable young woman who discovers that the Dustin Hoffman-starring film was based on her own family history. Her grandmother, played by MacLaine, was the model for Mrs Robinson, and her own parentage is questionable.
Costner plays an older man who seduces Aniston's character as director Ted Griffin attempts to turn the central conceit of the original film on its head.
Griffin will be making his directorial debut on the movie, having previously worked as a screenwriter on the likes of Ridley Scott's Matchstick Men, and the remake of Ocean's 11.
Shooting is already under way and the as-yet-untitled film is set for a summer release.
The Graduate won an Oscar for director Nichols in 1968 and garnered nominations for its young star Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, who played Mrs Robinson, and Katharine Ross, who played her daughter. There were also three more nominations, including one for best picture.
