Starmer slams ‘reckless’ Russian warship after shot fired in English Channel

  • A Russian frigate, the Admiral Grigorovich, fired warning shots near a 40ft British yacht named Bright Future, carrying a British couple in the English Channel on Tuesday.
  • The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) stated the shots were not aimed at the yacht but were an attempt to prevent a possible collision with what they assessed as a drifting warship .
  • Sir Keir Starmer described the incident as 'reckless' but suggested the MoD's assessment indicated it was not 'more sinister' than a drifting vessel, while still acknowledging broader Russian aggression.
  • The Russian defence ministry claimed the yacht made a 'dangerous approach' and that warning shots were fired after attempts to signal the crew, asserting their actions were in strict accordance with international shipping regulations.
  • The British couple, Jane and Alan Kelvey, who were on board, denied being on a collision course, with Mr Kelvey dismissing the Russian statement as 'just normal lies'.
