Sir Keir Starmer made a joke about Larry the cat, Number 10's Chief Mouser, whilst discussing the Renters’ Rights Act.
Speaking at a reception for homelessness charities and organisations who helped bring about the legislation, the prime minister explained that the new act gives people greater rights to keep pets.
He laughed as he said he had to buy his daughter a cat, Prince, in order to convince her to live at Downing Street.
Turning his attention towards Larry, he said: “You should've seen Larry when this was passed. He really went through the roof.
“I'm not sure he completely understands the concept of tenant responsibility,” Sir Keir joked, drawing a laugh from the crowd.
