Starling Bank to create 1,000 jobs in Manchester after signing Landmark deal

Starling Bank is to create 1,000 jobs in Manchester after signing a ten-year deal for space at a prominent city centre office building.

The digital bank has snapped up 14,061 sq ft of space on the fifth floor of Barings Real Estate's Landmark building near St Peter's Square.

Other tenants include Santander UK, Xero UK, RSM, HSBC UK, Allianz Insurance, Grant Thornton, JLL and social enterprise Change Please.

Starling Bank first announced its plans to create 1,000 jobs in Manchester in December 2022 but did not reveal where it would be opening an office.

Ian Mayhew, managing director, UK asset management at Barings, said: "To have been selected by Starling Bank for its fourth UK office is fantastic news and we are delighted to welcome their team to Landmark.

"It’s great to see the leasing momentum continue into 2023 and we are pleased to be able to deliver a high class working environment for a range of innovative and market-leading businesses."

Susanna Yallop, chief people officer at Starling Bank, added: "We’ve had some outstanding applications for our roles in Manchester already, affirming the city’s place as the tech capital of the North.

"We want to offer our talent the best of the best; the facilities at Landmark made it the obvious choice for us."

Leasing agents for Barings were CBRE and Colliers. Starling Bank was advised by JLL.

In January, Starling Bank boss Anne Boden said the digital bank expects to more than quadruple its profits in 2023 after a strong performance in December.

Ms Boden, the chief executive and founder of the digital bank, cheered its profitability, surging customer base, and lack of reliance on a "silly valuation" to raise cash.

In her new year update, she distanced Starling from rival digital banks and fintechs who are looking to raise cash, having become profitable last year for the first time in its eight-year history.
