Starlet Sam Mather signs first Manchester United contract after making under-23s debut

Sam Mather has signed his first Manchester United professional contract after an impressive start to the season for United's under-18s.

Mather made his first under-23 appearance for United in last weekend's 3-1 defeat to Arsenal. He was rewarded with a call up for United's premier youth side following an impressive beginning to the season for the under-18 side.

The young winger replaced prospect Zidane Iqbal on the 68th minute after United's under-18 match was postponed, permitting him to make the step up.

The highlight of the 17-year-old's brilliant start to the season was in the under-18's fixture against Leeds, scoring a goal and providing an assist as his side ran out 3-0 winners.

Mather marked his goal with a nod to Cristiano Ronaldo in emulating the 'Siuuu' celebration, demonstrating the effect Ronaldo's arrival is already having on United's young players.

Daniel Gore set United underway in the tie with a smart finish from a Marc Jurado assist on his first start of the season.

Gore joined Mather with a call-up to England under-18s squad for the first time, and their performance against Leeds, where they both scored, exemplifies why they are on the radar of the national team.

The fixture also saw Ethan Ennis make his debut after arriving from Liverpool in the summer.
