Starbucks to bring back reusable cups with 25p discount for first time since March

Coffee chain Starbucks will start accepting reusable cups from today, after a four month break as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Seattle-based retailer said customers will be able to bring their own mugs and claim a 25p discount on their drink in the process.

A spokeswoman told Mirror Money that a new contactless model will be in place as the discount comes back into force.

Under new guidelines, customers will be asked to place their reusable flask in a ceramic mug to maintain a "no touch" policy.

It follows in the footsteps of rival chain Costa, which reintroduced reusable cups on June 5, alongside its 25p promotion.

However, Cafe Nero, Pret a Manger and McDonald's are still in talks over how and when the measures will be phased back.

Starbucks banned reusable mugs in the UK in March, shortly before closing all stores as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

At the time, the company said: "We are actively monitoring the situation and taking precautionary measures to ensure the ongoing wellbeing of our partners (employees) and customers.

"Out an abundance of caution, we are pausing the use of personal cups or tumblers in our stores across the UK."

All branches are now back in business, with the chain taking part in both the Chancellor's VAT cut and the Eat Out to Help Out scheme.

The coffee retailer said food and drink will be discounted by 50%, bringing the price of a small latte or cappuccino down to £1.38 instead of £2.76.

Food is also discounted, with an all day breakfast roll - containing scrambled eggs, pork sausages and smoked bacon - now £4.32 instead of £2.16.

The discounts will apply on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, when the Eat Out to Help Out deal is on.

Prices will also vary slightly depending on your location - but you'll still get 50% off the original cost up to a maximum of £10 per person.

Eat Out to Help Out gives diners half price meals and non-alcoholic drinks, up to £10 a head, in restaurants, cafés and pubs throughout August.

It's part of a Treasury pledge to give the hospitality sector a cash boost as the furlough scheme is would down following the four month lockdown.
