Starbucks has announced that it will offer NHS workers free hot drinks as it reopens 150 outlets across the UK.
The coffee chain was forced to shut in March after Boris Johnson announced a nationwide lockdown.
On Thursday, 150 Starbucks outlets resumed trading in the first phase of the firm’s reopening plans, with the majority of those stores operating a drive-through service.
A “handful” of shops will offer a takeaway service, a spokesperson for Starbucks said.
“All stores will be serving a near-complete beverage menu, with everything from lattes to cappuccinos, iced coffees and Teas to frappuccinos,” the spokesperson added.
“Food will also be on offer but with a slightly more restricted menu, focused on our most popular items.”
The US-based coffee giant also confirmed that all NHS staff will be offered a free large drink during the pandemic.
Announcing the move on its social media channels, Starbucks said: “As a small gesture of gratitude for everything NHS workers have and continue to do, we’re offering a free tall beverage of their choice at our stores.”
NHS staff can redeem drinks at Starbucks stores or petrol stations by showing their work badge.
All Starbucks customers are being asked to check the firm’s online store locator to see if their local branch is open.
Starbucks is among a number of large chains easing back into business after almost two months out of action.
KFC, Nando’s, Pret A Manger, Starbucks, Subway and McDonald’s have all reopened sites for delivery or takeaway.
On Wednesday, McDonald’s began trading from 15 sites across the UK after carrying out “operational tests” late last month.
