Starbucks appears almost overnight in Swansea's Uplands

A new Starbucks is opening in Uplands.

The coffee giant is set to open in the former site of Headmaster's Hairdressers in Uplands Crescent, joining countless independent cafes, as well as competitor, Costa.

The new coffee shop seems to have appeared overnight, with locals stating that the sign only appeared shortly after midday on January 11.

There has not been a confirmed opening date announced, but Wales Online understands the café could be trading as soon as Friday (January 14) with staff working around the clock to get it open.

It appears as though this store will be for takeaway orders only, as well as offering its usual delivery service.

This would be the fifth Starbucks to open in Swansea, with other sites at Port Tennant, Village Hotel, Morfa Shopping Park, and Llansamlet, and it will join 13 other coffee venues in Uplands Crescent

Reactions to the new Starbucks on social media have been mixed, with some highlighting the wealth of local, independent businesses already in the area.

One Facebook user said: "But we already have a Costa and the vegetarian cafe, and Jenkins does coffee, and a few other places...I am not sure I see the point."

Another commented: "I am very much weighing off my reaction... more jobs, etc... all good. But I like supporting independent coffee places (especially Brynmill and also Dylan's for me!!). Also not happy if it's just takeaway. So many more takeaway cups! Also, quite telling that they shut down the one in the city centre (I think?) And are now betting on the Uplands. The student pound is presumably one part of the calculation. It will bring more footfall. Perhaps good for other shops?"

A third added: "That's a sad sight. Please support independent, local coffee businesses instead."

However, others were pleased to see the new addition to Uplands, adding that it would create new jobs and potentially increase footfall.

Local resident Nicky Roberts said: "I'm pleased to see Starbucks opening in the area. It's not for everyone but more choice is always better. Plus, they'll presumably be open after 5pm which none of the other cafés in the area seem interested in doing at the moment."

Another Uplands local, Sara Monzer, said: "I think it’s good to see more businesses opening up in Uplands as this creates more jobs, more footfall in the area which can benefit everyone in the area. Also, people love having many choices.

"It is important to stay supportive of our local coffee shops in the area like Crumbs Kitchen, Done and Dusted and Dylan’s Coffee shop but I think we should be welcoming this new business venture and wish them success."

Uplands has become a haven for independent businesses over the years, and these businesses have seen the community described as one of the hippest places in the country taken over by a wealth of coffee shops, bars and restaurants.
