Starbucks and Burger King drive-thru branches planned for empty Washington site

Brand new Starbucks and Burger King drive-thru branches could be coming to Washington.

Plans were submitted to Sunderland City Council earlier this month that would see the creation of the drive-thru coffee chain and fast food restaurant on empty land near Parsons Interchange leading to the A194. If given the go-ahead, two new buildings will be constructed next to each other.

The Armstrong Road site where the drive-thru branches are hoped to go is less than two miles away from a McDonalds and stands across the street from an Aldi Store and a B&Q. The site is also within a close distance to public and private schools, such as the Washington Academy.

A statement accompanying the plans states: "The proposed development will be constructed to a high standard, with both units incorporating internal café seating areas, serving and back of house areas, and additional outdoor seating areas."

A total of 42 parking spaces are also proposed, including four disabled spaces and two electric vehicle charging spaces. Up to 10 cycle parking spaces are also provided near to the main entrances of both units.

The plans add: "It is considered that the proposed development will not harm the vitality or viability of any nearby centres due to a format that is functionally not suited to the identified centres and very different to the existing restaurants / coffee shops within them.

"The proposals also cater for a distinct market segment that will not compete with existing town centre uses, focused largely on linked trip trade from the surrounding employment /commercial uses that already make this location a destination in its own right."

A decision on the plans is yet to be made.
