Patty Jenkins will direct a new Star Wars film, Disney has announced.

The Wonder Woman director will be at the helm of Rogue Squadron, a new adventure set in the Star Wars universe which follows a group of pilots.

This makes Jenkins the first woman to direct a Star Wars feature film, following the work of Victoria Mahoney as second unit director on The Rise of Skywalker and Deborah Chow on an episode of spin-off series The Mandalorian.

It will be released for Christmas 2023.

Speaking about the project, Jenkins explained how her father was a fighter pilot who died in service, with his death “igniting a desire” in her to create “the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time”.

Disney executive chairman Bob Iger tweeted: “We are thrilled to have the great Patty Jenkins directing our @StarWars feature film Rogue Squadron, and as a true admirer of her work, it is an honour to have Patty directing her next film for us!”

The news was announced as part of Disney’s investor presentation on Thursday (10 December), where it was also revealed that Disney+ would be releasing 10 new Star Wars series in the next few years.

Jenkins’s latest project, Wonder Woman 1984, will be released in the UK on 16 December.
